Knitspiration!

My husband’s absence has meant I’ve had a bit of time to be anti-social this week and do some digital browsing.

A few knitterly discoveries have inspired me…..

1. Podcasts.

Reading a post about podcasts on My Tangled Yarn Knitting Adventure made me curious. I listen to the radio a lot but not podcasts. Some of the ones I’d heard in the past (not about knitting) had been rambling and just plain boring and I’d got put off. The blog post made me think again so I listened to the ones recommended in the blog and its comments. The one that inspired me was called Woolful. It’s all about the lives of people involved in knitting and explored the background of wools, designers and so on. What interested me was the ideals and values of these knitters and how they’d got started.

Likewise, I discovered KnitBritish which is my favourite podcast so far. The speaker has a fabulous voice and accent which I just enjoy hearing. It’s also about British wool and as  a British knitter, this has so much relevance. A lot of the indie knitting movers and shakers seem (and I use this word deliberately because this is just my perception) to be based in Scotland and the Shetlands – I’ve only ever visited Scotland briefly but these podcasts and the images linked to Woolly Scotland do inspire me to go.

These podcasts are so personal- there’s a strange intimacy about listening to someone at such length about their reflections and ideas. You feel that you know the speaker – even if they haven’t got a clue about you.

2. Funchal Moebius.

In that time before turning off the light at night, I’ve been doing a bit of Ravelry browsing – not for anything in particular. I had no idea about what my next project would be until I found Funchal Moebius. This stranded colour work is such a beautiful piece of knitting – a piece of art! And (even better still) I think I’m up to making this. I didn’t dither – first thing the next day, I downloaded the pattern and ordered the yarn. It was my birthday so I deserved a treat, I thought. I’ve got the hang of two-handed knitting whilst making the cushion of my last post, however, I know that my tension is much tighter for colour work than standard knitting. Making a jumper with a colour work yoke would not be successful (maybe I could do it if I changed needles?). Funchal Moebius is colour work throughout so it skirts the tension issue rather nicely and gives me chance to practice and hopefully, make something that looks fantastic.

3. Green Gables socks.

Not a discovery but this WIP is looking good. The first sock is finished and the second one started. I’d ordered the yarn, not really noticing it had “sparkle.” When this arrived in the post, I wasn’t sure I liked it – I’m not a sparkly, glittery person. However, I’ve changed my mind. There is just the right amount of sparkle in this yarn – it just lifts the pattern. I’m so happy with my one sock – now it’s just having the patience to make the next one without getting distracted by Funchal Moebius (when the yarn arrives!)

Half-term visit ‘Up North’

Holidays!!

For half-term, I’ve taken the children to stay with my in-laws in Newcastle. My husband is away for 4 weeks photographing a car rally  so it’s great to have some family company and be looked after. We’ve been to Seaham Harbour where my father-in-law grew up; it was a sunny day- a reminder that Sping is on its way…

My thoughts are already turning to my next project – my hut 8 cardy is coming along well now that I’ve finished the yoke and am down to the waist shaping.

Next, I’ve decided to have a go at some lace-knitting. As a distraction during a sleepless night a week ago, I found myself on Ravelry, browsing. I’m not sure how but I ended up looking at shawls. Normally, I don’t wear shawls however I had my hair cut short at Christmas so my neck feels the cold and I’ve been wearing more scarves. As Sping comes, maybe I will wear some shawls. I enjoy knitting patterns and like the idea of learning to do some “fancy” knitting with some interesting stitches. The pattern is Tornved by Karie Westermann

My mother-in-law is a master knitter (or should I say Mistress Knitter?) and she was telling me about a wool shop nearby in Whitley Bay so we decided to take a trip. I wanted to find some yarn to make the shawl with.

This is a fabulous shop. It’s a small business that oozes its owner’s knitting passion. The shop is devoted to knitting and the range of yarns is huge. All around the shop are displays of knitting projects. The usual baby jackets (so cute though!), to intricate scarves, soft cowls, textured jumpers and colourful blankets. All beautifully knitted and inspiring! The owner, Barbara, was winding her hand painted yarn at the counter- the colours were just what I was wanted  for my shawl! Lots of blues blended with other colours which will make the yarn as much a feature as well as the pattern of the shawl. It wasn’t due to go on sale until Saturday but Barbara let me buy it early. A unique souvenir of my visit.

I can’t wait to start knitting this but I will make myself wait. I try to finish one project before I start the next. I could easily be an “unfinisher” and I’ve resolved not to be a “finisher”!

Spoilt for Choice

There was a lot of excitement in the house when this was done. It’s for my daughter’s birthday next weekend and she loves it! So much so that I let her have it early. I thought the excitement would wear off by next week if it sat in the spare bedroom, hidden, but not really hidden as my wrapping paper would never cover it. My son wants one and my daughter wants more cushions – I’m flattered, it’s good that they are valued.

The socks are coming on apace. One is finished and the other is growing rapidly – it will be done in a day or so. I’ve enjoyed sock making. The socks have grown quickly and managing the needles have kept me entertained. You Tube tutorials got me through the Kitchener graft quite easily and the socks seemed to come together magically. There is no sewing up with a sock so I like the way that when a sock drops off the needle, it really is finished.

Twitter knitters have opened up a huge range of independent knitters and this has led me to my blog title. There are so many and I’m spoilt for choice with beautiful yarns and interesting patterns. I want to support these small businesses – it seems like knitting is one of the few areas where choice is opening up and not being cut down by big retailers who can underprice their goods.

I wanted to have another go with circular needles. My first experience was that the wool got caught from the cable to the needle but I’m now realising that all needles are not the same. My problem was probably cheap needles so I splashed out and got some Knit Pro Symphonie ones. Also I will create garments without seams which seem clever. I also want to have a go at making an interesting stitchwork pattern, not too tricky but with a bit of challenge.

I looked at making a number of cowls:

Lovely colour work. Expensive to make compared to the others as I'd need to buy them all

But then I saw this cardigan on Twitter from Eden Cottage Yarns – I liked the circular striped pattern and the way it was made entirely on circular needles. The stitch pattern is easy but I think there will be challenges around the needles.

The cowls were lovely but hopefully, Spring is coming and I wouldn’t be wearing them for too long. A cardigan will be good for Spring. I went for a rust colour – I’m brown haired and brown eyed so the colour should suit me. The grey looks effective but I want a bit more colour.
